The teachers, students, and staff of the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology celebrated the university’s 22nd founding anniversary on Monday.

The university vice-chancellor, Professor S M Abdur Razzak, and University Grants Commission member, Professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, along with the university’s other officials, inaugurated the day’s events in the morning in front of the university’s administrative building by hoisting the national and the university flags, and releasing pigeons and balloons.

Later, the vice-chancellor, along with other officials, placed wreaths at the graves of the martyred students of the university and held a prayer session there.

The vice-chancellor and the UGC member also planted one krisnachura tree on the university campus.

A colourful procession was later brought out on the campus to mark the day.

A discussion was also held at the university auditorium, where UGC member Professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan addressed as the chief guest.

In his speech, he said that the primary role of the universities was to produce innovative and creative individuals.

‘Classrooms give us the right to question and, through questioning, new knowledge is generated,’ he said, adding, ‘A university has two essential dimensions – its infrastructure and its education. In changing circumstances, universities must embrace the aspirations of the people.’

Vice-chancellor Professor SM Abdur Razzak said, ‘The responsibility entrusted to us is to innovate and develop indigenous technologies. If we can fulfill this responsibility properly, the country will move forward, and people’s hopes and aspirations will be realised.’

Student welfare director Professor Md Rabiul Islam Sarker presided over the inaugural ceremony.

A special prayer was arranged at the RUET central mosque after zuhr prayers, wishing for progress of the university and welfare of the nation, while a safe blood donation programme, a debate competition, a poster presentation competition, and a photo exhibition were organized to mark the day.

RUET was established in 1964 as Rajshahi Engineering College with three engineering departments, namely Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Civil Engineering, with only 122 students.

Later, it was converted to Bangladesh Institute of Technology, Rajshahi in 1986 and was upgraded to Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology in 2003.

At present, the university has four faculties, 18 departments, two institutes, 397 faculty members, over 5650 students, 525 officers and staff, and seven residential halls.
