Viqarunnisa Noon School and College on Tuesday suspended a teacher following an allegation of expelling some students for wearing hijab.

A show cause notice has also been issued to accused teacher Fazilatun Nahar, asking explanation why she will not be dismissed.

The teacher denied the allegations against her.

The Viqarunnisa authorities issued a notice in this regard on Tuesday.

According to sources, the incident took place on August 24 during an examination of Class VI at its Bashundhara branch.

The school notice read that allegations were raised against assistant teacher Fazilatun Nahar for expelling 22 students from a classroom for wearing hijab.

Based on the allegations and as per the ad-hoc committee decision, the teacher had been suspended, the notice further read.

The show cause notice has asked the accused to present her explanation within seven working days.

Fazilatun Nahar told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday night that on August 24 the incident took place at the last period of Class VI.

‘I entered the classroom behind seven minutes of the class time and supposed to take a quiz,’ she said.

When she entered the classroom, two volunteer students were checking dresses of the students and she asked them to go outside the classroom with the students who did now follow the dress code, she said.

Shortly afterwards, she called all students inside to take the quiz, she said.

‘Neither did I expel any student for wearing hijab, nor did I call any student terrorist,’ Fazilatun said.

She also alleged that the school authorities suspended her even no formal complaint was filed against her from the guardians or the students.

Viqarunnisa Noon School and College principal (acting) Mazeda Begum admitted that they did not get any formal complaint from anyone in the incident.

‘We read some reports in some dailies and then we probed the incident,’ she said and added that as they found proof they suspended the teacher.
