A total of 34 aspirants, primarily announced ineligible to vie in the forthcoming elections to the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union, appealed for a review of their nomination papers.
They appealed to the election commission as they were given the chance to correct errors in their nomination papers.
DUCSU election’s chief returning officer Mohammad Zashim Uddin on Saturday told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the day was the final day for submitting the appeals.
The appeals will be reviewed by the settlement committee, he said.
According to the commission to hold DUCSU and hall elections, 1,570 aspirants, out of 1,618 who submitted nomination papers, were announced primarily eligible to vie in the elections scheduled for September 9.
August 25 is the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers and the final list will be published on August 26, according to the election schedule.
The Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on Saturday issued a press release saying that all of its leaders and activists who were not in the Chhatra Dal’s panel for the elections were instructed to withdraw their nomination papers by August 25.
An electoral atmosphere has gripped the campus, with candidates busy with election preparation, though official campaigning is yet to begin. Aspirants were seen exchanging greetings with students in halls and on campus.
Chhatra Odhikar Parishad-backed panel’s vice-president candidate Bin Yamin Molla, at a press conference at Madhu’s Canteen on Saturday, alleged that the university administration was trying to delay the election by creating artificial crises.
He alleged that the administration was refusing to update voters’ photographs and names, and claimed that many non-residential students might be barred from voting unless their hall cards were renewed.
The university administration on the day protested at the distortion of comments made by vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmad Khan on the DUCSU polls.
In a press release, the administration said that the VC made a clear statement on the election when asked by journalists after an event marking DU Black Day at the TSC auditorium, but some media outlets misrepresented his remarks.
The latest DUCSU elections were held on March 11, 2019, after a 28-year gap.
