The first-year students of Presidency University’s Computer Science and Engineering Department have captured attention with their ingenuity, dedication, and technical prowess.
Entering the programme with minimal prior coding experience, these students have remarkably developed sophisticated computer games as part of their inaugural Programming Laboratory project, under the expert mentorship of their instructor.
Harnessing the C programming language and the Raylib graphics library, they transformed conceptual ideas into fully functional and engaging games.
The initiative involved ten teams, each comprising up to two students, who navigated the full spectrum of game development from ideation and design to coding and rigorous testing within the allocated timeframe.
Among the submissions, three projects stood out for exceptional creativity and technical sophistication: Yunus Chowdhury and Rafidul Alam Shimul reinvented the iconic Flappy Bird, integrating original designs and illustrations to deliver a fresh, immersive experience.
Rimi Shikdar, working independently, created Maze Runner, a puzzle-based game challenging players to navigate intricate mazes and reach their objectives. Abdullah Ibne Taher and FM Taisum collaborated on a modernised version of Pong, featuring opponents powered by artificial intelligence.
This achievement reflects not only the students’ diligence but also the mentorship of the CSE faculty members. Arko Shikdar, the course instructor and a BUET alumnus, guided students through every development stage, simplifying complex programming concepts and providing indispensable technical support.
His encouragement and creative insights significantly enhanced students’ confidence and enthusiasm. Shikdar emphasized that department Head Nayeem fosters a culture of ‘thinking out of the box’ while ensuring a collaborative and approachable learning environment.
Professor Shahidul Islam Khan Nayeem, head of the CSE department and dean of the School of Engineering, praised the students’ accomplishments, saying, ‘This success illustrates how structured guidance and a nurturing environment enable students to achieve remarkable technological feats in a short span.’
He added, ‘Our students’ learning extends beyond classrooms, developing internationally relevant skills through clubs and extracurricular initiatives. Our Board of Trustees always hire the best graduates from market as faculty members. Mentorship from distinguished faculties such as Arko, a multiple-time national Math Olympiad gold medalist and top-ranking BUET CSE coder, ensures the department’s continued excellence.’
Presidency University’s CSE Department offers a dynamic academic ecosystem, where students actively engage in clubs spanning programming, AI, blockchain, robotics, and more, complemented by workshops, research projects, and hands-on exercises. Creative clubs and societies in photography, language, culture, and debating further enrich their skills, preparing them for real-world challenges.
Through the collective efforts of faculty, students, and administration, Presidency University’s CSE Department has emerged as one of Bangladesh’s premier technology education hubs for ICT. Committed to nurturing the next generation with cutting-edge knowledge, research expertise, and innovative thinking under expert mentorship, the university continues to shape the future leaders of a modern Bangladesh.
