Some of the students of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, who began hunger strike three days ago, demanding a clear roadmap for the central student union election, continued their fast unto death protest on Tuesday.

At least three of some ten hunger strikers, however, withdrew themselves from the protest on the day, saying that they did so as the university authorities assured them of taking measures soon.

On Tuesday, the university administration issued a press release stating that after consultations with the University Grants Commission, the authorities had agreed in principle to meet the students’ demands within 10 working days.

The three students who withdrew from hunger strike were among five students who were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Monday after falling ill from fasting.

According to the statement issued by the university authorities, the Begum Rokeya University Act, 2009, does not include any provision for a central student union.

The present administration, however, has taken measures to form a central student union after raising the issue in its 108th Syndicate meeting, it says.

It also said that the university administration submitted draft constitutions for both the central union and three residential halls to the UGC on May 14 this year, which were currently under review. Once reviewed, it would be forwarded to the education ministry, and then to the country’s president, also the chancellor.

After approval of the policy and publication of gazette notification, and completion of other legal processes, the authorities will announce the election schedule, intending to hold it by October.

Vice-chancellor Professor Shawkat Ali told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· about 7:30pm Tuesday that three more students ended their hunger strike.
