A section of teachers, officials, and employees of Rajshahi University staged a demonstration on Thursday, demanding the reinstatement of the abolished ward quota facility for their children and grandchildren to be admitted to undergraduate courses at the university.
They staged a sit-in in front of the university’s administrative building for two hours from 10:00am, boycotting regular activities except for taking examinations.
Addressing the sit-in, Urdu department professor Ataur Rahman said that they had gathered to demand their rightful institutional facilities.
‘The quota facility for children and grandchildren in admission exists at other universities and in the law enforcement agencies,’ he claimed.
‘Depriving our children of such institutional benefits at Rajshahi University is nothing but discrimination,’ he said.
He warned that if the university administration failed to meet their demand within a week, they would launch a full-scale strike, boycotting the classes and examinations.
RU Officers’ Association president Moktar Hossain also threatened to bring the university to a standstill if their demand was not met soon.
On January 2, the university administration abolished the ward quota facility for the children and grandchildren of teachers, officials, and employees for undergraduate admissions.
The administration took the decision about twelve hours after students had confined the vice-chancellor, pro-vice-chancellors, and other officials inside the administration building.
Previously, the children and grandchildren of university teachers, officials, and employees used to enjoy a 5 per cent quota for admission to the university’s undergraduate courses.
