The plaster of ceiling of a building at a Dhaka University student hall frequently fall off exposing residential students to danger.

The plaster of a large area of the ceiling of the top floor of a building fell off late Monday night.


No injuries were reported in the incident that happened after 11:00pm in a bathroom at an extension building of the university’s Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall housing male students.

Shahidullah Hall provost Aminul Islam Bhuiyan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Wednesday, ‘The building is quite old. Also water from a nearby hall and this hall drains onto its roof, which has worsened its condition. However, we have already removed the hazardous portion.’

He added that a meeting was held on Wednesday afternoon where a decision was made to undertake permanent repair work of the affected building.

Resident students of the hall said that the halls under the science faculty were very old, with cracks visible across large portions of the ceilings and in many rooms.

They said they had to move around constantly fearing accidents.

Mohammad Mariful Islam Munna, a resident student of the hall, shared a video on his Facebook account showing fragments of the collapsed plaster scattered across the floor.
