Bangladesh Medical University observed the 44th anniversary of death of Bangladesh Nationalist Party founder Ziaur Rahman, also a former president of the country, at the basement of BMU鈥檚 Super Specialised Hospital in Dhaka.

The event featured prayer sessions and discussion, said a press release on Sunday.

The speakers called on everyone to be vigilant so that there was no conspiracy regarding the national elections.

They emphasised on ensuring healthcare for all, providing healthcare to every home, freeing those who were discriminated during the fascist Awami League government and ensuring a fair environment for education in educational institutions.

The outgoing president of Doctors Association of Bangladesh鈥檚 central committee Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid, BNP鈥檚 deputy health secretary Dr Parvez Reza Kakon, DAB outgoing senior joint secretary general Dr Mehedi Hasan, BMU pro-vice-chancellor for research and development Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Hawlader, BMU planning and development director and outgoing president of BMU DAB Dr Erfanul Haque Siddiqui, BMU proctor and outgoing general secretary of BMU DAB Dr Sheikh Farhad, additional director of Super Specialised Hospital and BMU DAB outgoing joint secretary general Dr Md Shahidul Hasan Babul, BMU Dean Professor Dr. Md. Shamim Ahmed, BMU dean Professor Dr Md Atiar Rahman, BMU additional registrar Dr Md Delwar Hossain Tito, among others, spoke at the event.

Born on January 19, 1936 at Bagbari village in Bogura, Ziaur Rahman, the 7th president of the country, from 1977 till 1981, was assassinated by a group of army officers at the Chattogram circuit house on May 30, 1981.

Zia came to the limelight by making the declaration of independence in March 1971 on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of the country.

He was a sector commander and led the Z Force during the War of Independence.

He was decorated with the gallantry award Bir Uttam for valour in the war.

On November 7, 1975, he was freed by sepoys and people from captivity at the hands of a section of the army and was brought to power.

He founded the BNP in 1978.
