Nagad has disbursed Tk 9,000 crore in education stipends, social safety net allowances and other subsidies in the recently concluded financial year 2024-25, said a press release.
Among the disbursed funds, the largest allocations went toward stipends for primary-level students, education assistance trust stipends and social safety net programs. Additionally, Nagad facilitated payments for several other sectors, including daily wages under the Ministry of Disaster Management and the Forest Department.
In total, about 2.25 crore beneficiaries have received government aid through Nagad.
Md Motasem Billah, administrator of Nagad appointed by the Bangladesh Bank, said, ‘Nagad has ensured transparency and accountability in the disbursement of social safety net allowances and education stipends this year. This success was made possible through close coordination with relevant ministries and government agencies.’
In the past fiscal year, stipends worth Tk 3,000 crore were distributed to nearly 1.5 crore students across various levels of education. This included 90 lakh primary students and 54 lakh students from secondary to undergraduate levels. Depending on the grade level, each student received monthly stipends ranging from Tk 75 to Tk 200. These funds were transferred in three-month or six-month instalments directly to beneficiaries’ registered Nagad wallets.
Additionally, the Ministry of Education provided special grants – also disbursed through Nagad – to 13,312 students studying from Ebtedayee to Fazil under the Madrasah Education Board and from vocational to diploma levels under the Technical Education Board.
Nagad has played a key role in disbursing social safety net allowances on behalf of the Department of Social Services. In FY25, Nagad disbursed Tk 6,000 crore in this sector, reaching more than 75 lakh beneficiaries in four instalments throughout the year. These beneficiaries included elderly, widows, marginalised people, persons with disabilities, members of the Bede community, and third-gender individuals — all receiving their entitled payments directly into their Nagad wallets.
The allowances included monthly payments of Tk 850 for impoverished persons with disabilities, Tk 600 for the elderly and Tk 550 for widows and deserted women. Nagad also disbursed a significant portion of maternity allowances under the Department of Women Affairs.
