
NASSA Group chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder has signed a draft power of attorney to initiate the sale of several properties to pay the workers’ dues for the current month.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment came up with the information at a press release signed by ministry public relations officer Abdul Malek on Saturday.
According to the release, the NASSA Group chairman has signed important documents related to the draft power of attorney for selling assets to clear workers’ dues.
The properties include Plot-6 on Road 7 in Gulshan, a seven-storey building covering an area of 2,06,000 square feet at Taiyabpur mouza in Ashulia, another piece of land covering five bigha, also a 10-bigha plot at Char Chengakandi mouza in Narayanganj, a plot bought from Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha and shares worth about Tk 86 crore.
The conglomerate’s officials said that with the signing of the draft power of attorney, other procedures for the sale of assets would soon be completed, ensuring timely payment of workers’ arrears, said the release.
The Anti-Corruption Commission in February this year filed a case against its chairman Nazrul Islam on charges of illegally acquiring wealth worth over Tk 781.31 crore.
Nazrul, who founded NASSA Group in 1990 and was a former chairman of EXIM Bank, led the Bangladesh Association of Banks for nearly 17 years during the Awami League-led regime since 2008.
After the fall of the AL regime Bangladesh Bank removed him and his wife Nasreen Islam from the EXIM Bank board on August 29, 2024 and he was later arrested on October 2.
Nazrul was placed on remand in various cases filed on different charges, including murder during the July uprising.
He is now in jail.
