A 35-year-old man was shot to death and another was injured in a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Chardumuria village under Munshiganj Sadar upazila Monday morning.

The deceased is Arif Mir, 35, of the village.

The injured victim, Arif’s cousin Imran Mir, is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The murder occurred only eight days after a factional clash between the same two groups that left a youth, Tuhin Sarkar, dead in front of Munshikandi Primary School under the same upazila on November 2.

Locals said that Monday’s clash erupted from a longstanding dispute between Arif, a supporter of former union BNP joint general-secretary Awlad Hossain, and a group of the followers of district BNP convening committee member Atik Mallik, over establishing dominance in the area.

At about 6:00am on Monday, as Arif and Imran came out of their house in Chardumuria village, a group of Atik’s followers allegedly attacked them and opened fire on them, they said.

The deceased’s wife, Parul Begum, alleged that six or seven men of the Atik-led group opened fire and killed her husband.

Local people rushed Arif and Imran to Munshiganj General Hospital, where doctors declared Arif dead on arrival.

Critically injured Imran was later sent to DMCH for better treatment.

Munshiganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Saiful Alam said that police forces were deployed in the area to prevent any further violence.

It is alleged that the two groups have been in dispute over the inclusion of Awami League members following the ouster of the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

The dispute previously led to a clash on September 5, leaving eight people injured by gunfire.

Awlad Hossain alleged that BNP leader Atik had been providing shelter to AL men and claimed that Atik’s supporters had killed Arif.

Denying the allegations, Atik Mallik claimed that the Awlad-led group was involved in recruiting AL activists and was carrying out attacks targeting BNP members of his rival group.
