Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday called on the interim government to hold the Jatiya Sangsad elections in the first half of February 2026, warning that failure to do so would render it a failed government.

Speaking at a meeting at Munshi Meherullah Maidan in Jashore commemorating the seventh anniversary of the death of former BNP standing committee member Tariqul Islam, Fakhrul emphasised that the BNP was a party rooted in the people’s struggle.

‘The BNP is not a party to be undermined. We have reached this position through sacrifices. If we take to the streets, political matters will unfold differently,’ he said.

Without naming any party, the BNP secretary general said that some quarters were trying to foil the forthcoming national elections and were attempting to mislead the people. He urged them not to do so.

He also criticised the interim government advisory council for acting in a partisan manner.

Saying that the government had given political parties seven days to reach a consensus on the  implementation

method of the July charter, Fakhrul observed that political parties were not mere playthings.

‘We did participate in all the consensus commission meetings and gave our views. The issues enjoying consensus must be implemented while the rest should be left for the next JS. But the advisers are acting with bias, conspiring to destabilise the country,’ he said.

Marking ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ on November 7, Fakhrul highlighted the country’s historical struggle against hegemony and dominance, saying, ‘We must observe this day with respect and ensure that hegemony no longer threatens our democracy.’

Fakhrul concluded by urging the people to vote for the BNP’s election symbol, the sheaf of paddy.

The event was chaired by Jashore district unit BNP president Syed Saberul Haque Sabu and attended by central leaders, including Amalendu Das Apu, Mofiqul Hasan Tripti, TS Ayub, Sabira Nazmul Munni, Abul Hossain Azad, Nazrul Islam, and Md Ishaq.
