A group of unidentified people attacked the house of freedom fighter and Krishak Sramik Janata League founding president Kader Siddiqui in the Akurtakurpara area in Tangail district town early Sunday.
The building on Kabi Nazrul Sarani houses the ‘Sonar Bangla Community Center’ on the second and third floors and the veteran freedom fighter lives on the floor above the community centre.
According to the staff at the house, Kader Siddiqui was sleeping at home when a group of 10 to 15 attackers began to throw brick bats and stones at the house at about 1:00am.
The attackers, some of whom used helmets and the others used masks to cover their faces, climbed the gate of the house using a ladder and entered inside and vandalised two cars parked there, they said.
They said that the attackers fled the scene when the locals came forward, hearing the sound of the attack.
Tangail sadar police station officer-in-charge Tanbir Ahmed said that the police had started an investigation into the matter.
Kader Siddique, addressing a press conference at his Tangail home at around noon, said that he would have been happy to see his home demolished if there was peace in the country.
‘My house was attacked at night. We don’t know who did it. 10-15 people threw stones and broke the cars. I will file a case. We did not expect this dictatorial attitude after the anti-quota and anti-discrimination movement,’ he said.
‘If the Awami League is a dictator, how will we describe today’s actions?’ he wanted to know.
He also questioned whether the common people would remain safe if his house was not safe.
He requested the government to take initiatives to stop the ‘clandestine attacks’ and urged the country’s people to stand up against the misdeeds.
Kader Siddiqui’s younger brother and former Kalihati upazila chairman Shamim Al Mansur Azad Siddiqui was also present at the press conference.
