Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday alleged that a conspiracy was going on to replace liberal politics with extremist politics in the country.

鈥楢 conspiracy is going on in the country to remove moderate politics, liberal politics, liberal democracy, and to bring extremist politics in Bangladesh. This will be extremely harmful for the country,鈥 he said.

He came up with the remarks at the launching ceremony of a book, 鈥楻oktokto July鈥, authored by Syeda Fatema Salam at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

鈥榃e must work together to establish a liberal democracy in the country,鈥 he said.

He said, 鈥榃e know that there will certainly be differences of opinion, there will be different thoughts and ideas in politics. But in the present environment, our people are falling into deep confusion. If you ask them, they will say, 鈥淲ill the election take place?鈥 This kind of fear, anxiety, and frustration has emerged.鈥

鈥楾he election will be held as per the announced schedule, as there is no alternative to it. If the election is stopped or does not take place, the nation will suffer immensely, and the possibility of the return of fascism will greatly increase,鈥 he said.

He said that many were trying to revive fascism from different sides. 鈥榃orks are even going on abroad regarding this.鈥

The BNP leader hoped that the country would have the opportunity to move towards the desired goal of a democratic state system through a free, fair, and impartial election.

The BNP will bring about the change that people expect鈥攔eversing the destruction caused by fascism to the economy, society, health system, and education system, he said.

Mentioning the struggle for 15 years for the restoration of democracy, party chairperson Khaleda Zia鈥檚 sacrifices and imprisonment for six years, acting chairmen Tarique Rahman鈥檚 exile for over 16 years, he said that many of the party leaders were killed and became victims of enforced disappearance.

Fakhrul asked the party activists not to think that the BNP had already come to power. 鈥楳any are assuming that, and due to that assumption, they cannot control criminal activities. But you are still not close to power.鈥

鈥楾here are many conspiracies and plots. You must overcome them with unity, with your good work, and by reaching out to the people,鈥 he said.

Poet Abdul Hai Shikder chaired the event.
