The National Citizen Party on Friday said that demanding polls without the fascist’s trial and reforms in various sectors is a plot to postpone the national election.

The party convener, Nahid Islam, made the remark while addressing a roadside rally in the Zero Point area of Jashore district town.

The rally was organized as part of the party’s current countrywide programme marking the first anniversary of the July uprising.

Nahid said that the people of Bangladesh would not accept elections without trials and reforms.

‘We will keep the promises, the abolition of the fascist system and the establishment of a new political settlement, which we made through the July uprising,’ said Nahid, also a former central leader of Students Against Discrimination that spearheaded the July uprising to oust the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

Nahid also said that fascist Sheikh Hasina had made the constitutional and government institutions partisan.

‘Our heroes did not sacrifice their lives to continue fascism. We demand change here,’ he added.

If the police, civil administration, army and Election Commission are not changed even after the July uprising, the country will go into a dark era, Nahid said.

The party’s chief organiser for south Hasnat Abdullah said, ‘the NCP is being labelled as an anti-election party in a very well-planned manner.’

He said that the NCP wanted reforms, trial and election but a party wanted only elections.

Those who want only an election, have a plot, said Hasnat, adding that those parties do not want elections, trial and reforms at all.

NCP member secretary Akhter Hossain threatened the political parties to complete reforms through dialogue. ‘Otherwise, people will take to the streets again like they did during the July uprising.’

The NCP began its national-level march on July 1 from Rangpur by offering prayers for uprising martyr Abu Sayed as part of its July 1- August 5 countrywide programme to mark the first anniversary of the uprising.

A group of student and youth leaders who led the uprising formed the NCP on February 28.

NCP leaders and activists, including the party’s chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, senior joint convener Samanta Sharmeen, senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adeeb, and senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara, among others, participated in the marches and rallies in Jashore and Khulna districts.

The NCP is scheduled to hold marches in all districts till July 30, demanding the trial of the Awami League and its leaders for the massacres during the mass uprising, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution aiming at building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.

The party leaders and activists will hold marches and rallies in Satkhira and Bagerhat districts today.
