Politicians and professionals on Saturday at a discussion in Dhaka said that the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus should hold a free, fair and credible general election in the country after carrying out required reforms.

Jatiya Sanskar Jote, an alliance of 35 political parties organised the discussion titled ‘July charter, reforms, trial of the fascists and elections’ at the National Press Club presided over by the executive convener of the alliance, Amin Ahmed Afsari.


At the discussion, Amin Ahmed Afsari, also a retired army officer, said that the fall of the fascist Awami League government created an opportunity for democratic transition of the country by holding a free, fair and a credible general election after required reforms. 

Golam Sarwar Milon former minister and also executive chair of the Janatar Dal said that the people of the country were eagerly waiting for democratic transition of Bangladesh.

But the next general election must be held in a credible manner after carrying out required reforms by the interim government, Golam Sarwar Milon said.

Amsa Amin chairman of the Naitik Party said, ‘We must build a corruption-free society in order to establish a democratic country where people would enjoy their rights.’

Shawkat Mahmood, general secretary of the Janatar Dal said that the interim government should hold the reforms, trials of the fascists and the next general election on the basis of consensus among all political parties.

The Indian government was taking various steps to destabilise the interim government of Bangladesh, Shawkat Mahmood said.

Leaders of different partners of Jatiya Sanskar Jote including Sheikh Saluddin Salu, Khandakar Golam Mortuza, Maulan Obaidul Haque, Sayeb Ahmed, Abdul Kader Zilani, Mizanur Rahman Miju, former member of the parliament Tasnim Rana, retired major Mujibul Haque and others spoke at the discussion.
