
A Narayanganj court on Friday sent former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy to jail in connection with a murder case after overnight protests and clash.
Narayanganj senior judicial magistrate Mainuddin Kader passed the order after police produced her before the court in the case filed with the Siddhirganj police station over killing a garment worker named Minarul Islam, 29, on July 20, 2024 during the student-led mass uprising.
The Narayanganj senior judicial magistrate’s court also set the next date for hearing the case on May 26, said court police inspector Md Kaiyum Khan.Â
According to police and local people, a police team went to Chunka Kutir at Deobhog, Narayanganj, paternal residence of Ivy, at about 11:30pm on Thursday to arrest her, also Awami League Narayanganj district
unit’s senior vice-president.
They said several thousand of local people, upon hearing about the incident, rushed to her house after making announcements on sound systems in this regard and chanting slogans against the arrest.
Despite protests by locals over the night and after her refusal to be arrested at night, police arrested Ivy at about 5:45am on Friday.
While talking to reporters before her arrest, Selina Hayat Ivy said that she would contest in the election even if she is sent to jail.
‘I am not afraid of anyone. I am Ali Ahmed Chunka’s daughter,’ Ivy declared, chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ and ‘Joy Bangabandhu’ slogans.
She said she did not flee but stayed at her home following the August 5, 2024 political changeover.
When the police convoy was carrying Ivy through the Kalirbazar area in the city, a group of 15-20 activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its front bodies reportedly attacked the police team, said witnesses and police.
Two crude bombs were hurled at the police convoy but police managed to take Ivy away from the scene safely.
Narayanganj superintendent of police Pratyush Kumar Majumdar told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they were
investigating the attack incident.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Gazipur quoting jail officials reported that Ivy was sent to Kashimpur Female Central Jail in the district at about 2:00pm.
Ivy was elected mayor for three consecutive terms — once in 2011 as an independent candidate, and in 2016 and 2022 as an Awami League candidate.
