A local leader of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party Ashraful Haque was named prime accused in a case filed against 77 people on Friday over the killing of two ruling Awami League leaders at Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on Thursday night.

Ashraful Haque is the former Noyalavanga union council chairman and former Shibganj upazila unit president of the BNP. Besides, most of the accused in the case are involved in BNP and Jamaat politics.


Chapainawabganj district council member and Noyalavanga union Awami League general secretary Abdus Salam and Noyalavanga union AL member and Harinagar High School assistant teacher Abdul Matin were hacked and shot to death by a group of unidentified people near the Ashrayan Project in front of the Ranihati College in Shibganj on Thursday.

Ferdousi Begum, widow of Abdus Salam, filed a case against 52 named and 20 to 25 unnamed people with Shibganj police station on Friday night.

Shibganj police station officer-in-charge Sazzad Hossain said that they had arrested Ashraful Haque鈥檚 wife Ambia Begum, 45, and Ghorapakhia union BNP general secretary Ashraful Islam, 52, in connection with the case.

According to the police, both Abdus Salam and Abdul Matin were accused in BNP leader Alam Hossain killing case.

Another accused in the case, Durul Hoda, a member of Nyalabhanga Union AL Ward 9 committee, was hacked to death on June 25, 2023, two days after he was freed on bail.

Alam Hossain, Ward 9 member of Nayalavanga union council and president of the Ward unit of the BNP, was hacked to death on April 13, 2023.
