The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday said that Sheikh Hasina government has become ‘subservient’ to India.
‘Our question is very clear, first of all, we want a fair distribution of Teesta water and we want a fair share of each river that we share. This is our right, the right upheld by the international law. The government is absolutely failing to utter these words,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a prayer session at the party’s Naya Paltan central office.
‘They [the government] have become servants to India today. Not only for India, but for all the neighbouring countries the foreign policy has bowed down. They can’t answer even when the bullets come from Myanmar. This is a genuflecting ruling group sitting atop us,’ he said.
He said that he did not see any success in prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India.
‘Today the so-called prime minister who is not elected has gone to India and signed 10 agreements. We saw that they signed mostly memorandums; many contracts will be signed, and they would send technical teams,’ he said.
‘But the issue that we are not getting our fair share of Teesta River’s water, there is no agreement. What happened in addition? The Teesta project is proposed. India has offered to participate in that project, to invest in it,’ said Fakhrul.
BNP secretary general said, ‘You have seen that corruption stories of some police officers have come out. The story of the corruption of the former army chief [Aziz Ahmed] has come out. Once again, corruption stories of some other police officers are coming out.’
‘I was surprised to note that a statement was issued from the Police Service Association threatening journalists over revealing the truth, saying that such truth [reports of police corruption] cannot be revealed because it destroys their image,’ he said.
