The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party has begun to reorganise the party and its associate bodies amid discussions over failure in the street movement for ousting the Awami League government before the January 7 general election.

As the latest move of the initiative, the party on Saturday reshuffled 39 positions in the central committee, including vice-chairmen.

Some new faces have also been given new responsibilities in the BNP central committee.

The party recently dissolved committees of about 10 of its units or front bodies without giving any specific reason.

On Friday, the BNP dissolved the committees of its Dhaka, Chattogram and Barishal city units and its youth front Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal.

A number of BNP leaders, however, doubt if the committee reshuffles could ensure momentum in the street movement as the party could not hold a council session although the tenure of the national executive committee expired long ago.

The latest council session of the national executive committee was held in March 2016.

According to the party constitution, the council session has to be held in every three years.

The party, however, reshuffled the committee issuing a press release without holding any council session, the leaders said.

A number of BNP leaders of different levels, however, said that the organisational decision of a large scale committee reshuffle was aimed at reorganising the party in the backdrop of the failure in the previous movement.

According to them, many weaknesses have been revealed at various levels of the party after the failure in the recent movements, especially before the January 7 parliamentary elections.

After the elections, many questions were raised about the failure of important units and front bodies, they said.

There was an elaborate discussion among the party policymakers on the role of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and the Juba Dal in the movement while the BNP expected these two organisations to be in the leading position in the movement, they said.

Several BNP standing committee members told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that many more committees would be reshuffled or dissolved soon.

The party leadership knows that holding a council session is not easy for the party at this moment while gaining momentum in movement is important, the leaders said.

‘For various reasons, many leaders failed to make their proper contribution to the movement while many even without party post made significant contribution and they should be evaluated,’ a BNP standing committee member said, asking for anonymity.

Asked about the recent move of committee reshuffle, BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhory told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that there was nothing to be surprised.

‘Most of these changes are very regular and due for a long and these pending works have been done now as the party now gets some time with no serious street movement right now,’ he said.

Another member of the party standing committee, however, said that the BNP would try to resume street protests after Eid-ul-Adha.

So this reshuffle is being made considering the future movement, he said.

He said that some leaders of the dissolved committees would get major responsibilities and many would be dropped.

A press release signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the reshuffle in the central committee on Saturday.

According to the press release, central committee leader Asaduzzaman Ripon was made vice-chairman, former BNP lawmaker Zahir Uddin Swapan was made advisory council member while BNP joint secretaries general Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Lion Aslam Chowdhury were made BNP chairperson’s advisory council members.
