The Indian police handed over a youth’s body to their Bangladesh counterpart on Friday afternoon, a day after he had reportedly committed suicide inside the Indian territory.

The deceased was identified as Zakaria Ahmed, 25, son of Alauddin Alai of Lamargram Kamalbasti in Uttar Ranikhai union under Sylhet’s Companiganj upazila, said the police.

Companiganj police officer-in-charge Uzayer Al Mahmud told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they received Zakaria’s body at about 12:30pm in presence of the Border Guard Bangladesh and Indian Border Security Force following a flag meeting between the two border forces.

‘The body has been sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination,’ he said.

He also said that local residents saw Zakaria’s body hanging from a tree inside the Indian territory along Uthma border point of Companiganj upazila near the International Pillar No 1257 on Thursday morning.

‘Later, his family recorded a general diary with the police in this regard,’ the police officer said.

Zakaria’s relatives told reporters that he got married on Monday. On Thursday, he went out of home at about 6:00am.

Later at about 11:30am, they received information from the local people that his body was hanging from a tree across the Indian border, they said.
