
The Indian Border Security Force Monday morning handed over the body of a Bangladeshi youth, who was shot dead by BSF personnel two days earlier along the Dattagram border in Sharifpur union of Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar.
The victim, Pradeep Baidya, 22, a resident of Dattagram village, was killed on Saturday in the no man’s land on the Indian side of the border. BSF personnel took away the body after the shooting, according to Border Guard Bangladesh officials.
At around 9:00am Monday, Indian police handed over Pradeep’s body to Bangladesh police in the presence of BGB and BSF officials at the Chatlapur checkpoint in Sharifpur, said Kulaura police station inspector, investigation, Sudipta Shekhar Bhattacharya.
‘We will hand over the body to the victim’s family after completing legal procedures,’ the police official added.
BGB-46 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel ASM Zakaria said that the force had lodged a formal protest with the BSF.
‘We are expecting to hold a flag meeting with the BSF in the next couple of days,’ he added.
Pradeep, a farmer and the sole breadwinner of his family, had been taken to Kailashahar Hospital in India after his death, local residents said.
At least 11 Bangladeshi nationals were killed and 23 injured in BSF shootings and assaults between January and April this year. Five of those deaths occurred in April alone, followed by three in March, one in February, and two in January, according to data from rights group Ain o Salish Kendra updated to April 30.
Border killings by the BSF have occurred almost every month since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, when she fled to India amid a student-led mass uprising, except for November of that year.
From August 2024 to April 2025, at least 24 Bangladeshis were killed and 32 injured by BSF personnel. At least 30 Bangladeshis were killed by the BSF in 2024, compared to 31 in 2023, ASK data showed.
Since January 2009 up to November 2024, the BSF has reportedly killed 588 and injured 773 Bangladeshis, according to rights group Odhikar.
