
A Bangladeshi youth died while undergoing treatment at the Cumilla Medical College Hospital on Monday morning, hours after he received bullet injury in firing by the Indian Border Security Force along Madla border under Kasba upazila in Brahmanbaria district.
Md Shakib, 17, son of Motaleb Hossain of Guchchagram village in Bayek union under Kasba upazila, was hit by a bullet when the BSF opened fire at midnight past Sunday.
Shakib went to Madla to collect a smuggled Indian motorbike, said Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Samiul Islam.
‘Shakib died while undergoing treatment at the Cumilla Medical College Hospital on Monday morning,’ the UNO said.
Sujan Barman, 35, a resident of Agartala in India’s Tripura state also received bullet injury in the incident and was brought and admitted to a private hospital in the capital city Dhaka, the UNO added.
Border Guard Bangladesh 60 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Ziaur Rahman could not be reached for comment on the killing of Shakib despite several attempts.
The BGB in a press release later in the afternoon said that it detained bullet-hit Indian smuggler Sujan Barman at a hospital in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area on the allegation that he has illegally entered Bangladesh through Kasba border in Brahmanbaria.
The release said the BGB has handed over Sujan to the Hatirjheel police station for necessary legal actions.Â
India’s BSF keeps killing Bangladeshis in border areas with the number of the killed increasing in recent months despite repeated promises by India to bring down the killing to zero.
At least 11 Bangladeshi nationals were killed and 23 injured in BSF shooting and beating incidents from January to April this year.
Of those killed, five were in April alone, three in March, one in February and two in January, according to rights group Ain O Salish Kendra data updated till April 30.
Border killings by the BSF happened every month excepting November in 2024 since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising in the year, when she fled to India, the statistics show.
At least 30 Bangladeshis were killed by the Indian border force during 2024 against 31 killed during 2023, ASK data show.
From August, 2024 till April, 2025, at least 24 Bangladeshis were killed and 32 injured.
Following the overthrow of the Hasina regime on August 5, 2024, two people were killed by the BSF during the rest of August, two in September, three in October, none in November and six in December.Â
