A Bangladeshi national was killed allegedly by the Indian Border Security Force at Madhya Singimari border under Hatibandha upazila in Lalmonirhat district on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Hasibul Alam, 24, son of Zahidul Islam from the same area.
According to local people, Hasibul and several others were cutting grass on Bangladeshi land near the border when a patrol team from the BSF’s Nagar Singimari camp at Shitalkuchi in India crossed into Bangladesh, detained Hasibul and took him across the border.
The BSF shot Hasibul in his eyes while trying to put him into a vehicle, and later admitted him to a hospital in Cooch Behar of West Bengal, where he died in the evening, they said.
BGB officials said a flag meeting between the BGB and the BSF was held at the zero point of the Singimari border regarding the incident.
Hatibandha Police Station officer-in-charge Mahamudun Nabi said that locals informed him that a youth named Hasibul was taken by the BSF from the border, he was shot and later he died while undergoing treatment in India.
‘Efforts are underway to gather more details about the incident,’ the OC added.
According to rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra, at least 25 Bangladeshis were killed by the Indian BSF in 2024 while the number was 28 in 2023.
