Dhaka University deputy registrar Muhammad Lovelu Mollah was arrested early Tuesday, after he posted on Facebook about the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict on deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a crimes against humanity case.
Early Tuesday, several students and members of the university’s proctorial team handed him over to the Shahbagh police station and later in the morning, the police sent him to court.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Masum Mia rejected his bail plea and ordered that he be sent to jail.
On Tuesday afternoon, a group of Dhaka University students demonstrated in front of the vice-chancellor’s office, demanding the dismissal and prosecution of Dhaka University teachers who incited ‘violence’ by issuing statements against the verdict on Sheikh Hasina, along with the university officers, employees aligned with what they termed the fascist League.
Earlier, on Monday, following the verdict, Lovelu Mollah posted on his Facebook profile a photo card featuring Sheikh Hasina with the caption, ‘I don’t care’ with his Facebook caption ‘Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu’ echoing the immediate reaction of Sheikh Hasina reported in the media.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday sentenced deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Awami League, and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death for committing crimes against humanity during the July–August 2024 mass uprising.
Former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, who turned a state evidence, received a reduced sentence of five years’ imprisonment.
Confirming the development, Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Khalid Monsur told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the proctorial team, along with students, brought Lovelu Mollah to the police station, adding that he had posted on Facebook opposing the death sentence handed down to Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India on August 5 in the past year amid the student-led mass uprising.
Lovelu Mollah was arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act and was sent to court in the morning, he added.
In the presence of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union literature and cultural secretary Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad and other student leaders, the protesting DU students submitted a memorandum to the pro-vice-chancellor (academic), professor Mamun Ahmed.
Dhaka University Central Students’ Union, Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union, Chittagong University Central Students’ Union and Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union on Tuesday in a joint statement said that they, along with students, would continue their movement to ensure the university administrations take strict action against those who sided with a perpetrator of crimes against humanity.
They also expressed satisfaction over the verdict. They said that the verdict marked a landmark step towards establishing justice.
They also stated that the that teachers under the banner of ‘Progressive Teachers of Bangladesh Public Universities’ issued a statement in support of Sheikh Hasina, which shocked and angered the public.
Reports said that the statement claimed to bear signatures of 1,001 teachers from various universities, though only 659 names appeared on the published list.
The students’ unions called on students of all universities to boycott all classes and examinations conducted by teachers who supported convicted criminal Hasina and urged students to socially and academically resist such teachers.
