¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· editor Nurul Kabir has been elected president and Bonik Barta editor Dewan Hanif Mahmud general secretary of the Editors’ Council for a two-year term.

The new executive committee of the organisation was announced following a meeting of the council, held at The Daily Star Centre in the capital Dhaka on Thursday with the immediate past president, The Daily Star editor and publisher Mahfuz Anam, in the chair, according to a press release.


Among the other office bearers, Tasmima Hossain, editor of Ittefaq, has been elected vice-president and Rushu Mahmud, editor of Suprobhat Bangladesh, assistant general secretary.

Mahfuz Anam, Manabzamin editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Prothom Alo editor and publisher Matiur Rahman, the daily Karatoa editor Mozammel Haque and the daily Inqilab editor AMM Bahauddin have been elected executive members of the new committee.

Members present at the meeting congratulated all newly elected committee members and expressed their commitment to strengthening the activities of the Editors’ Council through cooperation, the release said.

Newly elected president Nurul Kabir pledged to lead the Editors’ Council towards a greater success in the future.

He also vowed to work relentlessly, on behalf of the new committee, to ensure a free, safe and independent environment for journalists.

The immediate past president, Mahfuz Anam, said that the organisation would continue to work more resolutely to ensure free, safe and responsible journalism under the leadership of the new committee.

Established in 2013, the Editors’ Council campaigns for freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
