Bangladesh interim government has strongly condemned the violent attack on Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate Ershad Ullah during an election campaign in Chattogram-8 on Wednesday.
In an official statement, the government said that an immediate investigation by the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) indicated Ershad Ullah was not the intended target of the attack, but a stray bullet struck and injured him. Authorities wished him a speedy recovery and confirmed that a full probe has been ordered.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, the government reiterated its ‘unwavering commitment to protecting the safety and rights of all candidates and citizens participating in the democratic process.’
Chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has directed the security forces to spare no effort in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators. ‘Violence and intimidation have no place in our political and social life,’ the statement said, adding that the CMP has already launched a manhunt for the attackers.
The interim government also urged all political parties and their supporters to remain calm, exercise restraint, and ensure that the upcoming February general election is held in an atmosphere of peace, dignity, and fairness.
‘The government will take all necessary measures to guarantee the secure and peaceful conditions required for free, fair, credible, and festive elections across Bangladesh,’ the statement added.
