At least four people, including three with gunshot wounds, were injured in a clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy in a locality at Munshiganj Sadar on Friday afternoon.
The police after the clash between the supporters of Gazi and Molla groups recovered 14 unexploded crude bombs from the spot at Hoglakandi village in Char Kawra union.
The injured were identified as Sakib Molla, 30, Mohiuddin Molla, 35, Akash Molla, 25, and Sabbir Molla, 22.
Of them, Sakib, Mohiuddin and Akash with gunshot wounds were first taken to Munshiganj General Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Sabbir was admitted to Munshiganj General Hospital.
Local people said that the long-standing rivalry between the two groups flared up after members of the Gazi group allegedly assaulted Sabbir, son of Bahar Uddin Molla, when he went to a mosque for Friday prayers.
Soon after, a clash between the groups broke out when gunfire was exchanged and crude bombs were exploded.
Munshiganj General Hospital emergency unit physician Shaibal Basak said that three bullet-shot men were given primary treatment and later referred to Dhaka.
Jalal Molla, general secretary of Char Kawra union unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and a leader of the Molla group, alleged that the Gazi group, backed by Awami League leaders, carried out the attack on their supporters.
Delwar Gazi, panel chairman of Char Kawra union parishad and a leader of the Gazi group, however, denied the allegations.
Speaking from Dhaka, he said that the incident began with an altercation between two teenagers outside the mosque.
‘I had assured locals of a settlement, but later I heard that clashes broke out,’ he said.
Munshiganj sadar police officer-in-charge Md Saiful Alam said that they were informed about the clash from the local people.
‘The police rushed to the spot, but the attackers fled sensing our presence. We recovered 14 unexploded crude bombs. The situation is now under control,’ he added.
