A firefighter, who sustained severe burns while battling a fire at a chemical warehouse in Tongi on Monday, died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Shamim Ahmed, 40, a firefighter of Tongi Fire Station. He hailed from Netrakona district.


Fire Service and Civil Defence media cell officicer Talha Bin Jasim said that Shamim suffered 100 per cent burns during Monday鈥檚 fire that broke out at the Famous Chemical warehouse in Tongi鈥檚 Sahara Market area. He was rushed to the burn institute in a critical condition, where he died from his injuries at about 3:00pm on Tuesday.

Shamim joined the fire service in August 2004 and served the force for more than two decades. He is survived by his wife and three children.

The fire, which originated at about 4:30pm on Monday, also injured at least four other members of the fire service and a local shopkeeper after chemical drums exploded inside the warehouse.

Seven firefighting units took nearly an hour to bring the blaze under control.
