A couple and their two children were hospitalised with burn injuries after an air-conditioner exploded in their bedroom in the capital’s Jatrabari area early Saturday.
The victims, Tuhin Hossain, 38, his wife Eva Akter, 30, and their sons Mohammad Tanvir, 9, and Mohammad Tawhid, 7, are now undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The incident took place at about 1:30am on Saturday, the police said.
The institute’s resident surgeon Shawon Bin Rahman said that Tuhin suffered burns on 47 per cent of his body, Eva 15 per cent, Tanvir 40 per cent and Tawhid 8 per cent.
‘Three of the injured are in critical condition. They have inhalation burns,’ he said.
A relative of the injured, Farzana Akhter, said that the explosion occurred shortly after they had gone to sleep on Friday night.
‘My sister, brother-in-law and nephews rushed out the door to escape but were injured,’ she added.
The police said that the explosion might have occurred due to a lack of maintenance.
