At least 10 people sustained burn injuries in a gas cylinder explosion in Chattogram’s Chandanaish upazila Wednesday morning.

The incident took place at about 6:00am in the south Bailtali area under Chandanaish upazila, said Chandanaish Fire Service station officer Saber Ahmed.


He said that they, after receiving the news of the explosion, rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after about an hour.

The injured were rescued and sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment, he said.

The victims are Mahbubur Rahman, 45, Md Saurav Rahman, 25, Mohammad Kofil, 22, Mohammad Riaz, 17, Mohammad Yunus, 26, Mohammad Akib, 17, Md Harun, 29, Mohammad Idris, 30, Mohammad Liton, 28, and Mohammad Saleh, 33, he said.

According to the police and fire service officials, the explosion occurred when workers were unloading gas cylinders at the shop of Mahbubur Rahman in the Bailtali area.

One of the workers reportedly lit a cigarette at the time and it led to the blast, they said.

CMCH burn and plastic surgery department physician Dr Mohammad Khaled said that four of the 10 victims were now in critical condition.
