
Independent candidate Abdur Rasid Zitu, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement during the July mass uprising in 2024, has been elected vice-president and Islami Chhatra Shibir backed panel’s Mazharul Islam has been elected general secretary in the elections to the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union.
The Shibir-backed ‘Coordinated Student Alliance’ further tightened its grip, bagging 20 of the 25 seats in the central council, including the top three positions amid cheers and controversy on the campus.
The elections to JUCSU were held on September 11 and the results were announced on Saturday evening, after two days of tense delays and high-stakes political drama. Chief returning officer Professor Dr Moniruzzaman announced the results at the JUCSU Election Commission office.
Shibir backed panel’s Ferdous Al Hasan and Ayesha Sidika Meghla have been elected assistant general secretary (male) and AGS (female) respectively.
Other JUCSU members elected include: education and research secretary Abu Ubaida Usama (Chhatra Shibir), environment and nature conservation secretary Shafayet Mir (Chhatra Shibir), literature and publication secretary Zahidul Islam Bappi (Chhatra Shibir), cultural secretary Muhibullah Sheikh Zisan (independent), assistant cultural secretary Raihan Uddin (Chhatra Shibir), drama secretary Ruhul Islam (Chhatra Shibir), sports secretary Mahmudul Hasan Kiran (independent), assistant sports secretary (male) Mohadi Hasan and assistant sports secretary (female) Farhana Akter Lubna (Chhatra Shibir).
Besides, IT and library secretary Rashedul Imon Likhan, social welfare and human Development secretary Ahsan Labib (Bagshash), assistant social welfare and human development secretary (male) Touhid Islam, assistant social welfare and human development secretary (female) Nigar Sultana, health and food security secretary Husni Mubarak, and transport and communication secretary Tanvir Rahman (all Chhatra Shibir) were elected.
Three male and three female executive members were also chosen and they are Tarikul Islam, Abu Talha, Mohammad Ali Chishti, Fabliha Jahan, Nabila Binte Harun and Nusrat Jahan Ima.
The JUCSU election was held for the tenth time, breaking a 33-year dormancy since the last election in 1992, which had become defunct following a tumultuous incident at the Senate building.
