The Appellate Division on Monday cleared the way for holding the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union election, minutes after the High Court had stayed it until October 21.

Chamber Judge Justice Farah Mahbub stayed the High Court’s order after hearing a provisional petition filed by Dhaka University authorities.

Earlier, the High Court put a stay on the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election until October 21.

The bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Sk. Tahsin Ali issued the order after hearing a writ petition that challenged the eligibility of SM Farhad, a general secretary candidate from the Islami Chhatra Shibir panel.

The court also set October 30 for holding further hearing of the writ petition.

The petition was filed by BM Fahmida Alam, a candidate from the left-leaning panel ‘Aparajeyo Ekattor Ebong Adamya Chabbish’. She is running for the post of secretary for Liberation War and Democratic Movements.

Fahmida submitted an official pad from 2022 belonging to the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, alleging that SM Farhad was affiliated with the group.

The court also instructed Fahmida to file a written complaint with the DUCSU election tribunal within 15 days. The tribunal has been asked to investigate and report back to the High Court by October 21.

Lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua represented Fahmida Alam in court. Lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir appeared for Dhaka University.
