
Derailment of a compartment of a passenger train near the airport station in the capital on Saturday disrupted rail communications between Dhaka and the rest of the country for about four and a half hours.
Almost all trains from and to Dhaka ran behind the schedules due to the derailment, said Bangladesh Railway officials.
No causalities were reported.
The disruption caused serious suffering to the passengers as trains were behind schedules and many were seen stranded at different rail stations.
Anowar Hossain, station master of Dhaka rail station, popularly known as Kamlapur rail station, said that one compartment of Jamuna Express on the Tarakandi (Jamalpur)-Dhaka route derailed at about 8:17am on Saturday when it was entering the station in the capital.
Explaining that the Kamlapur railway station had two lines, one for departure from Dhaka and the other for entering Dhaka, the station master said that the derailment halted train operation on both the lines for about an hour.
After an hour train movement on the line for departure from Dhaka was resumed.
Train movement was resumed on the line for entering Dhaka at about 1:00pm after the derailed wagon was removed, he said.
‘Following the incident, all the trains, stranded at different places, ran almost one to two hours behind schedules,’ he said, adding that no one got injured in the incident.
The Silkcity Express on the Dhaka-Rajshahi route was scheduled to start from the capital at 2:45pm, but it left Dhaka at 4:50pm on the day, running around two hours behind schedule.
The Ekata Express on the Dhaka-Panchagarh route was scheduled to start from the capital at 10:15am, but left at 11:36am, an hour and 21 minutes behind its schedule.
The Rangpur Express on the Dhaka-Rangpur route was running an hour and 20 minutes behind schedule on the day as it left Dhaka at 10:20am instead of its scheduled starting time at 9:00pm.
