A farmer committed suicide by hanging himself in village Kharail under Mohonpur upazila in Rajshahi early Monday reportedly for failing to repay loans he had taken from different non-governmental organisations.

The deceased is Akbar Ali Shah, 55, of the village.

The incident occurred two days after all four members of a family in Paba upazila of the northern district died in a murder-suicide incident, reportedly driven by debt and hunger.

According to Akbar’s eldest son Suman Hossain Shah, Akbar Ali left home early in the morning, as he did every day, to look after their betel leaf field.

Sumon said that he, along with six workers, went to the betel leaf field at about 6:30am but did not find his father there.

‘After searching the area, we found my father hanging in a nearby betel leaf field,’ he said.

Abdus Salam, an uncle of the deceased farmer, said that Akbar became frustrated as he could no longer repay his loans.

‘Due to pressure from NGO officials and frustration caused by low prices of betel leaf, he might have chosen to end his life,’ he added.

Mohanpur police station officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that both Akbar Ali and his wife Selina Begum took multiple loans from several non-governmental organisations.

‘The couple had to repay Tk 5000 of the loans every week, and they had been struggling to repay the installments due to the fall in the price of betel leaves,’ he said.

He said that the financial strain was believed to have caused significant mental distress, which led him to commit suicide.

The police official said that a case of unnatural death was filed with his police station, and they had sent the body to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

On Friday, a man, his wife, and their two children were found dead at their house in Bamnashikor village under Paba upazila in Rajshahi.

The police suspect that it was a case of murder and suicide driven by debt and hunger.
