The death toll from dengue crossed 100 in the country this year, as at least three more people died of the mosquito-borne viral fever, with 448 hospitalisations in the past 24 hours till Sunday morning.

Including the latest, so far 101 people died of the disease and 24,183 others were hospitalised over the past eight months and 10 days since January, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.


Of the deaths, one occurred in Chattogram division and two in Dhaka South City Corporation, according to the DGHS.

A division and Dhaka city-wise spread of the new hospitalisations in the 24-hours till Sunday morning is: 95 in Barishal division, 81 in Chattogram, 84 in Dhaka division, 57 in Khulna; eight in Mymensingh; 34 in Rajshahi; two in Sylhet; and seven in Rangpur division; 34 in Dhaka North City Corporation, and 46 in Dhaka South City Corporation.

Currently, 1,374 patients are receiving treatment in various hospitals across the country.

Of the total hospitalisations, in January 1,161 people were hospitalised, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, and 5,951 in June.

Of the deaths, 10 people died of dengue in January, three in February, seven in April, three in May, and 19 in June. The vector-borne disease has spread its menace in the country as a serious public health concern over the past several years.

A dengue outbreak was first officially reported in the country in 2000 when 93 people died and 5,551 patients were hospitalised, according to DGHS data.

Dengue killed 1,705 people and sent 3,21,179 others to hospitals in 2023 alone against 853 deaths and 2,44,246 hospitalisations between 2000 and 2022, the DGHS data showed.

Last year, the country witnessed a severe dengue outbreak, causing 575 deaths and 1,01,214 reported cases. During the period 1,00,040 patients recovered.
