The bodies of six individuals killed during the past year’s July uprising, were handed over to Anjuman Mufidul Islam, a charity organisation, on Thursday for burial as unclaimed bodies.

The bodies will be buried at the Jurain graveyard in the capital Dhaka one year after they were killed as their identities could not be confirmed despite efforts, according to the police.

The bodies of the six victims, including a woman,  had been preserved in the morgue freezer at Dhaka Medical College Hospital since the uprising.

The student-led July uprising ousted the authoritarian Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

The bodies were handed over to Anjuman Mufidul Islam’s burial service officer Md Kamrul Ahmed from the DMCH morgue at about noon.

After handing over the bodies, DMCH forensic medicine department chief Kazi Golam Mokhlesur Rahman said that the bodies were brought to the hospital in August 7-14, 2024.

DNA samples were collected for identification, but their identities still remained unknown despite these efforts, he said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioner (crime) Faruq Hossain said that attempts were made to identify the victims through DNA and fingerprint analyses, but none were successful.

‘On court’s instructions, we are burying the bodies as unclaimed. However, we have preserved various evidences and samples. If someone comes forward with information or can identify any of them, necessary action will be taken in this regard,’ he added.

At least 836 people, including children, were martyred and more than 15,000 others were injured during the July uprising, official data show.
