The deceased, identified as Md Ariful Islam, 40, reportedly fell from the fourth floor of the under-construction Lecture Theatre building of the Central Library.
The incident occurred around 8:30am.
The construction was going on under the university’s ‘Further development project’, according to university officials.
Ariful was severely injured and was rushed to the university’s medical centre.
He was later taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar where he succumbed to critical injuries around 9:00pm.

Speaking about the condition of the victim, Ningtam, the attending physician at the JU medical centre, said that the victim’s facial injuries were severe. ‘We referred him to Enam Medical immediately due to deteriorating condition.’
Mominul Karim, chief engineer of Anik Trading Corporation, the firm responsible for implementing the construction work, said later on Friday night, ‘Although our work was temporarily halted, some workers remained on site. I heard over phone that a worker had died.’
Expressing shock over the incident, JU vice-chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan said that he was to hold an emergency administrative meeting regarding the ‘tragic death’ of the worker.
‘I want more than just compensation—there must be proper investigation and accountability,’ he said.
