The Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court on Monday sent former Islami Bank Bangladesh managing director Mohammad Monirul Moula to jail in connection with a case filed against him and 57 others on charges of embezzling Tk 1,092 crore through loan forgery.
Judge Md Jakir Hossain passed the order after Anti-Corruption Commission deputy director Yasir Arafat produced him before the court seeking order to send him to jail in the case.
Earlier, a team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police鈥檚 Detective Branch arrested Monirul Moula from his residence in the capital鈥檚 Bashundhara residential area at about 11:45pm on Sunday.
On December 29, 2024, the anti-graft agency filed the case with its integrated district office in Chattogram.
At the time of filing the case, Monirul Moula was the managing director of Islami Bank Bangladesh. Ahsanul Alam, former chairman of the private commercial bank, was also sued in the case.
Later, the bank鈥檚 board of directors removed Monirul Moula from his post in the bank due to his alleged involvement in loan irregularities and mismanagement unearthed by an external audit.
Islami Bank Bangladesh made the decision at its 395th board meeting held on April 6 and the decision received approval from the Bangladesh Bank on May 20.
Earlier in April, the bank had decided to send him on a three-month leave.
Monirul Moula was appointed the managing director of Islami Bank Bangladesh in January 2021 when the bank鈥檚 board was under the control of controversial S Alam Group. He came under pressure after the S Alam Group lost control of the bank following the fall of the authoritarian Awami League regime on August 5, 2024, in a student-led mass uprising.
S Alam Group chairman Mohammed Saiful Alam, who was a close associate of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, is now facing cases on charges of loan irregularities and money laundering involving huge sums.
