
One more dengue patient died with 352 others being hospitalised across the country in the past 24 hours till 8:00am on Saturday.
Also a sharp increase is marked in the number of people being infected with the vector-borne disease along with the deaths caused by it as monsoon has set in towards the end of May.
The deceased was identified as a 25 year-old women from Barura in Cumilla who was undergoing treatment at Cumilla Trauma Centre at the time of her death, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
Including the latest, total 31 people died of dengue this year and 7,429 others were hospitalised with the disease.
Of the hospitalisations, 3,084 people were admitted in the first 21 days of June with eight deaths, marking a sharp rise in the number of dengue patients as monsoon continues.
In January, 1,161 people were hospitalised, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May.
The death toll from dengue stood at 10 in January, three in February, seven in April and three in May. No death was recorded in March.
Of the hospitalisations in the past 24 hours till 8:00am Saturday, 167 patients were admitted in Barishal, 76 in Chattogram, 43 in hospitals in the Dhaka South City Corporation areas, 19 in healthcare facilities in Dhaka North City Corporation areas, 15 in different districts of Dhaka division, eight in Khulna, and 24 in Rajshahi.
Dengue has grown to become a major public health concern in the country over the past several years.
Bangladesh recorded its first dengue outbreak in 2000 when 93 people died and 5,551 patients were hospitalised, according to the DGHS data. The disease killed 1,705 people and sent 3, 21,179 others to hospitals in 2023 alone against 853 deaths and 2, 44,246 hospitalisations between 2000 and 2022, the DGHS data showed.
Last year, the country witnessed a severe dengue outbreak that resulted in 575 deaths and 1,01,214 reported cases. A total of 1,00,040 patients recovered during the period.
