Three members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police detective branch, including Lalbagh Zone assistant commissioner Junayed Hasan Shoeb, assistant sub-inspector Atik Hasan, and  constable Sujan, were injured as drug peddlers opened fire on them in the early hours of Thursday in the capital’s Fakirapool area.

Police arrested three drug peddlers on the spot after chasing them while two armed men who opened fire on police managed to flee, according to police officials.


The incident took place at about 12:20am when a DB team tried to stop a private car opposite to the Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh during a transfer of drugs between the peddlers and the two armed men, according to police.

DMP DB joint commissioner for South and Admin Mohammad Nasirul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that ASI Atik Hasan received bullet injury in the abdomen and constable Sujan in a knee and they were undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

‘AC Shoeb was injured in the finger by a bullet. We have arrested three people on the spot and seized the private car,’ he said, adding that two armed men in the private car fled the scene after opening fire.

According to a DMP press release, police seized 9,600 pieces of Yaba pills on the spot.

While talking to reporters after visiting the injured police officials at the DMCH later in the day, home adviser retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury told reporters that police were working courageously in the anti-drug drive as they arrested three people despite having bullet injuries.

Asked whether carrying light weapons would pose any threat to police in performing duty, he said that police were not only carrying light weapons but also necessary ones.
