The committee formed to probe the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo on the campus submitted its report to vice-chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan on Monday.
After reviewing the report, further steps would be taken according to the university’s prevailing rules, said the authorities in a press release issued on the day.
Meanwhile, demanding justice for their fellow, general students and the university unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, continued protests on the university’s campus for the 13th consecutive day on Monday.
Shahriar, a student of the Institute of Education and Research and also a leader of the Chhatra Dal university unit, died following an attack by miscreants in Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13.
On May 14, the police arrested three men for their suspected involvement in the killing. On May 20, three more people were arrested in this regard.
A seven-member committee was formed on May 14 to probe the death with one more member being co-opted in the committee later.
The university’s dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan handed over the report to the vice-chancellor at the VC office on Monday morning, said the press release.
At that time, among others, university proctor Saifuddin Ahmed and the probe committee’s member-secretary and assistant proctor Sharmin Kabir were also present.
Leaders and activists of the university’s JCD unit brought out a protest procession from the campus’s Hakim Chattar about 12 noon on Monday, demanding justice for Shahriar and resignation of the vice-chancellor and the proctor.
The procession ended in front of the vice-chancellor’s office where they staged a sit-in until around 2:20pm.
DU Chhatra Dal unit president Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos criticised the university administration saying that in its nine-month tenure of the current administration, the campus saw an uptick in crimes.
Its general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon demanded immediate resignation of the vice-chancellor and the proctor for their ‘failure’ to ensure justice for Shahriar and a safe environment on the campus.
Mugging, stabbing and killing became regular incidents on the campus now while the administration remained indifferent, he added.
On Monday morning, a group of students of the Institute of Education and Research also brought out a procession on the campus.
In the afternoon, another group of students held a rally in front of the Aparajeyo Bangla, demanding justice for Shahriar.
Earlier, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists on May 18, 20 and 22 blocked the Shahbagh crossing to press home their demands.
