
The education ministry has formed a high-level search committee to make recommendations on appointing vice-chancellors to public universities in the country.
The five-member committee is led by education adviser Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division under the ministry issued a circular in this regard on Sunday with immediate effect and published the circular on its web site on Monday.
The committee will also make recommendations on appointing pro-vice-chancellors and treasurers to the universities.
As per the circular, the president and the chancellor of the public universities (general, agricultural, science and technology and engineering) will appoint the vice-chancellors as per laws of the respective universities.
The search committee has been formed to make recommendations for three candidates picked from the submitted applications against the VC post in a university, it said.
Based on the committee recommendations, the chancellor of the universities, the president, will appoint the VC to the university, the circular said.
Four other members of the committee are University Grants Commission members professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan and professor Md Saidur Rahman, Rajshahi University vice-chancellor professor Saleh Hasan Naqib and BRAC University professor Firdous Azim.
The circular also said that if necessary, the committee could co-opt new members in cases of agricultural, science and technology and engineering universities.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division will give secretarial support to this committee.
