
At least 123 people were forced to enter Bangladesh from the Indian side through different bordering points in Khagrachari and Kurigram on Wednesday, creating a tense situation along the border with India.
National security adviser and chief adviser’s high representative on Rohingya issue and priority matters Khalilur Rahman on the day said that Dhaka had already communicated with New Delhi over the incidents of ‘push-in’ along the border.
At least 79 people were pushed in from the Indian side through two bordering points of Panchari and Matiranga in the hill district by the Indian Border Security Force on Wednesday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Khagrachari reported.
Khagrachari additional district magistrate Nazmun Ara Sultana said that all of them were now under the custody of the Border Guard Bangladesh.
In Kurigram, BGB arrested 44 individuals, including eight Bangladeshis and 36 Rohingyas, who were pushed in through different bordering areas under Rahumari and Bhurangamari in Kurigram on Wednesday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Lalmonirhat reported.
Kurigram BGB-22 commanding officer lieutenant colonel Mohammad Mahbub Ul Haque said that a protest note was sent to BSF regarding the matter.
‘We are getting news that people were being pushed in from the Indian side. If any of them are Bangladesh nationals, our authorities should be informed. Such incidents are not acceptable,’ National security adviser Khalilur, a former diplomat, told reporters at the foreign ministry.
He said that they were in discussions with New Delhi over the matter.
Several Bengali-speaking individuals without ID or passports have been detained by the BGB after they had entered Bangladesh from India illegally, according to several BGB officials.
Their identities are being verified by the concerned government agency, and appropriate action will be taken in coordination with the police, they said.
However, a strong protest note has been lodged with the BSF against such push-ins, and flag meetings are being held, they said.
The BGB officials said that anyone identified as an Indian citizen would be returned to India and added that the home ministry and the foreign ministry were informed to engage with Indian authorities.
BGB director for operations, Lieutenant Colonel SM Shafiqur Rahman, could not be reached for comments over the phone. He did not respond to a text message seeking an official comment.
Meanwhile, BSF members picked up four Bangladesh nationals near Jagadal border under Ranisankail in Thakurgaon early Wednesday, United News of Bangladesh reported.
Three of the Bangladeshis are Mister, 32, Hamidul Islam, 31, and Shamim, 24, but the identity of another victim could not be known until Wednesday evening, BGB-50 battalion commanding officer lieutenant colonel Tanzir Ahmed said.
BGB-Thakurgaon-50 Battalion Jagadal BoP officials said that a patrol team of Mukesh Camp of BSF 184 Battalion caught four Bangladeshi nationals from 200 metres inside India at about 5:30am on Wednesday.
Responding to a query, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam in an event in Gulshan on Wednesday said that the police superintendents of bordering districts were ordered to prevent extremists from entering Bangladesh amid the escalating India-Pakistan conflict.
The tension between the arch-rivals intensified on Wednesday with missile attacks from India on Pakistan territory killing at least 26 and Pakistan vowing to retaliate, according to international media reports.
Bangladesh and India share over 4,000-kilometre international border, the fifth-longest land border in the world, comprising 262km with the Indian state of Assam, 856km with Tripura, 318km with Mizoram, 443km with Meghalaya, and 2,217km with West Bengal.
