The Criminal Investigation Department of police on Monday arrested Sadeeq Agro Limited chairman Md Imran Hossain in connection with a case filed with the Mohammadpur police station in Dhaka on charges of laundering Tk 133 crore.
Special superintendent of police of the CID’s media wing Jasim Uddin confirmed the matter and said that Imran was arrested from the capital on Monday.
‘A press briefing on the matter will be held on Tuesday (today) at the CID headquarters at Malibagh in Dhaka,’ he added.
Earlier, on July 16, 2024, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against seven people, including Imran and officials of the Department of Livestock Services, on charges of irregularities and corruption.
According to the case, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock sent a letter to its Department of
Livestock Services on March 3, 2024, giving approval to sell the meat of 448 cows, including 15 Brahman cows, at a fair price through mobile sale centres.
Later, Sadeeq Agro owner Imran, also president of the Bangladesh Dairy Farmers Association, in collusion with some officials of the livestock department, took 15 Brahman cows along with the other cows from the Savar’s central cattle breeding farm in April, without maintaining the proper process.
They also did not maintain the mandatory condition set by the ministry that the cows must be slaughtered and their meat must be sold at a fair price from mobile centres during Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims.
During Eid-ul-Azha observed in June 2024, Sadeeq Agro was allegedly found selling some Brahman cows at high prices.
Sadeeq Agro has recently come under scrutiny for selling a goat for Tk 12 lakh to the young son of former National Board of Revenue official Matiur Rahman who is also facing graft charges.
