Sacked trainee police sub-inspectors continued their fast unto death programme for the second consecutive day on Tuesday in front of the secretariat, the country’s administrative headquarters, in Dhaka, demanding reinstatement of their jobs.

They said that they would continue their movement until the government issued a gazette notification in this regard.


‘We have no other option but to choose job or death,’ said sacked trainee SI Tariqul Islam.

He said that none from the government contacted with them.

Earlier on Monday, a four member team of the protesters met with the home adviser lieutenant general retired Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

Md Alamgir Hossain, one of the protesters who met with the home adviser, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday that the home adviser asked them to be patient.

‘We will not halt our movement until the government issue a gazette notification for the reinstatement of their jobs,’ he said.

They began fast unto death programme from 4:00pm on Monday after holding a sit-in programme at the same place earlier on the day.

Earlier, they formed human chain in front of the secretariat on January 5 and January 6.

Including the eight trainee SIs sacked on January 2, a total of 321 trainee SIs out 823 were sacked for breaching discipline during various sessions of training programmes after the fall of Awami League-led autocratic regime on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.

On October 21, 2024, at least 252 trainee sub-inspectors, who were receiving basic training at the Bangladesh Police Academy at Sardah in Rajshahi under the 40th outside cadet batch, were discharged allegedly for breaching discipline.

They were discharged 10 days before their graduation ceremony, scheduled to be held on October 31.
