Several dozens of sacked police members, who were dismissed from their jobs during the Awami League regime ousted in August 2024, formed a human chain in front of the Police Headquarters in the capital Dhaka on Sunday, demanding the reinstatement of their jobs.
They alleged that about 2,200 police constables and officers were sacked on different allegations, including family issues, remaining absent from duties, Facebook posts against the AL government and conflicts with AL leaders and activists.
The protesters, however, claimed that 500 of the sacked police personnel got verdict in favour of them to join the force from the administrative tribunal.
‘I was sacked from the police force for raising my voice against an Awami League activist. The conflict with the activist triggered as they tried to grab my sister’s land,’ said Mohammad Rezaul Karim Rubel, who was sacked from the post of constable after a criminal case was filed against him.
He said that he got verdict in favour of him from the tribunal seven months ago and applied to the PHQ on August 19 for his reinstatement in the past year.
Md Zakaria Mostafa was sacked from his post of sub-inspector in 2019 and got verdict in favour of him from the administrative tribunal in 2022.
‘We have applied to the Police Headquarters for allowing us to join the force. I am yet to get back my job five months after filing the application,’ he said.
He said that the incumbent Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner was reinstated in his job on the verdict.
The human chain programme that began at about 11:00am continued till 1:00pm.
The protesters withdrew their movement as senior police officials assured them of meeting their demand within next 15 days. Â
