The police launched an investigation into missing of at least 1,911 case dockets, including documents related to murder, narcotics, smuggling, and explosives cases, from Chattogram Court on Monday.
Kotwali police officer-in-charge Abdul Karim, said that an investigation into the matter had been commenced following a general diary filed with the police station.
‘We are actively looking into the disappearance of these case dockets from the court,’ he said on the day.
The files, stored in plastic-wrapped sacks, were temporarily placed in the court corridor due to a lack of storage space at the public prosecutor’s office.
On Sunday, public prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan filed a general diary with the Kotwali police regarding the missing documents.
PP Mofizul said, ‘The case dockets, regarding 1,911 cases, were placed in the corridor for insufficient storage space in our office. Following the court’s vacation, we discovered those were missing.’
About 28 to 30 court case dockets were stored at the PP office, Mofizul said, adding that on April 24, 2023, due to a space shortage, 1,911 case dockets were shifted to the corridor in front of the PP’s office in plastic sacks.
During the court’s vacation between December 13 and December 31, however, the files vanished, the PP said, adding that despite extensive searches they remain untraceable.
The PP office is located on the third floor of the Court Building in the Kotwali area in the city. Adjacent to it are the courtrooms and chambers of the metropolitan sessions judge and other judges. The court premises are bustling during the day with lawyers and litigants, but stricter security measures are usually in place after office hours.
