Several hundred members of Gram Police on Sunday afternoon blocked roads in Dhaka’s Kakrail area demanding nationalisation of their jobs to the interim government chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus.

They said that they took to the streets to press home their one-point demand.

Pankaj Malakar, a Mohalladar of Gram Police, said that they got only Tk 6,500 monthly.

‘A total of 10 members of Gram Police work in each union. Of them, nine members are Mohalladars and one is Dafadar. A Dafadar gets Tk 7,000,’ Pankaj told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

Jagadish Chandra Das, another Mohalladar, said that it was not possible to survive with such a poor amount of money.

‘A major part of our salary is spent on rent. We cannot take food properly,’ Jagadish Chandra said.

He said that he came to Dhaka from Faridpur to join the protest.

He also said that they had been staging protests to press home their one-point demand since 1980 but none was paying any heed to them.

The entire traffic system in Kakrail and nearby areas came to a standstill as they did not allow any vehicle to ply on the roads.

The protest also created huge traffic congestion in different areas, including Segun Bagicha, Press Club, Paltan and Gulistan, while many people were seen reaching their destinations on foot.

The protesters said that a nine-member team went to the state guest house Jamuna to meet with chief adviser to interim government Professor Muhammad Yunus.

They blocked the roads at about 2:00pm and their protest continued till 6:30pm.
