The death toll from the recent violence during student protests reached at least 218 till Saturday across the country as a wounded person died while undergoing treatment in hospital, and another man died in a clash in Gazipur in the afternoon on the day.

Md Emon, 17, succumbed to bullet wounds for which he had been undergoing treatment at at Dhaka Medical College Hospital since July 19. He was wounded in violence during the countrywide student movement for quota reform in government jobs.


Jahangir Alam, 45, died in a clash between the student protesters and police at Mouna Chowrasta in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Saturday afternoon, confirmed Gazipur police superintendent Kazi Shafiqul Alam.

Md Emon’s sister Tahmina said that her brother worked at a street-side food stall in Natun Bazar area in Badda in the capital.

He sustained the bullet wounds while going to the food stall, Tahmina said.

He died at the hospital’s ward-101 on Saturday at 3:00am.

With Emon succumbing to his wounds, the number of deaths at Dhaka Medical College Hospital rose to 90, while deaths across the country rose to at least 218, many of which were caused by bullet wounds. The deaths occurred both on the spot and in hospitals after law enforcement agencies along with ruling Awami League and its associate organisations launched crackdowns on the protesters in quota reform movement in the capital and other places across the country.

On Friday, at least two people, including a police constable, were killed as fresh violence erupted in Habiganj and Khulna.

The death toll was tallied based on the information collected from only 12 hospitals in Dhaka and some hospitals in 10 other districts as many hospitals either declined to provide information, or could not be reached for comments regarding the casualty number during the protests.

The government, however, on July 28 disclosed that 147 people, including ordinary people, students, police, and ruling Awami League activists, were killed across the country in the violence.

The official death toll reached 150 on July 29, said cabinet secretary Md Mahbub Hossain, referring to an update given to the cabinet.
